I dont know of any Metras near Hoffman estates,if there is one reasonably close,I am unaware of it,maybe you could go to Palatine,or Arlington hts or Roselle stations. The ride is approx 40-45 min,,give or take from there

Default Moving to Barrington!

Thanks for all the insight. This has been very helpful in our search. We've decided on Barrington and will be moving there in a few weeks. If anyone has any advice- feel free to reply.

Also, looking for a very reputable nanny service if anyone knows of one in the Barrington area.

THANKS!

Wheaton and Glen Ellyn are still pretty far from the city. I'd recommend Elmhurst. Closer to Chicago and It's served by Metra rail, and it has a "Main Street" program to revitalize the downtown. Schools are better than average from what I've heard, though I don't know firsthand. Here's a link to the Illinois Interactive School Report Card website wth school/district ratings. I grew up in the Round Lake, Grayslake area and my sister lives in Grayslake still it is a wonderful area the train system is right there and easy to do. The school system is great as are all the activities for the children. You would do very well checking this area out. I just moved from Chicago it's self to retire in NC. But I know you will be very pleased with that area.

The OP just said they decided on Barrington,("moving to Barrington in a few weeks").The job offer is in Elgin so some of those suggestions would have added a difficult commute to say the least

But like someone said, parts of Elgin are full of problems, other parts are quite beautiful. The town is doing a good job of cleaning up Ill give it that.

South Elgin, while it doesn't have a Metra station, is a 5-10 minute drive from right near randall road on rt. 31. In fact, my friends and I find that the elgin stop in 31 is close and convenient, and if you're not crazy about the hill you have to drive n (It is pretty steep) there is another one not 3 minutes from that one...

I like Elmhurst a lot. I drive through it every day to and from work. Very nice area. It has a small downtown, good schools, parks, older housing stock with character, close to O'Hare, Oak Brook mall, entertainment and not far from downtown at all (20 miles). Working in Elgin is the stickler. Elgin is just so far west. I'm not too familiar with Glen Ellyn except for that there is part that much nicer than the rest of it. Without getting into politics, Wheaton is a very conservative town - that may be good or bad for you. I am a BIG fan of Oak Park which is 24 minutes on the subway to downtown, but would be a haul for your wife. I think that your wife not having to travel to the city is somewhat of a negative here because getting to the city is easier since all Metra trains go there and you could have both taken the train. But since that's not possible, I'd look into Oak Park (very diverse, "artsy" with great schools) , downtown Itasca, Elmhurst, Bartlett, Arlington Heights (great downtown/schools), Buffalo Grove, Palatine, Hinsdale, St. Charles. If you message me privately and tell me what types of areas you like (housing, diversity, etc) I can be more specific.
