I'm currently looking at houses in these areas, any insights on any of the 3 areas ? If I had to rank them it would be Oak Park, Melrose Park, Elmwood Park but having only driven through them I could live in any of them? it seems you can get more house in Melrose Park and Elmwood Park but how is east Oak Park I guess I would worry a little about spill over effect from Austin.

The majority of the crime in Oak Park is on the east side. I don't know about crime stats in Melrose or Elmwood Park, but its probably lower than East OP. I suppose it depends on what you're used to, as many people who could live elsewhere choose to live in east OP.

Demographics are lot different between the three. OP is full of college-educated professionals and has more of the amenities that many of the young, internet-savvy crowd looks for (Starbucks, Whole Foods, Trader Joes, etc). MP and EP are more blue collar. I don't know all that much about those two burbs so I'll let others fill in the details. Public schools in OP are significantly better.

Oak Park is about two times larger than the other two suburbs mentioned, so of course with more people there's more crime most of the time. I think Oak Park is one of the exceptions to the rule because it averages 1 murder a year in a town of about 50K. Also if you are into diversity Oak Park is the best suburb for race relations. Like Sukwoo said the schools are great and there is plenty to do inside the Oak Park community.

Worried about spillover crime from Austin?

How about worrying about spillover crime from Maywood?

Melrose is half alright and half so and so.

I'm worried about spillover crime from Venom. He'll come spraypaint some crazy Venom balloon letters on the side of your house.

Venom is also a fence jumper. Heading for a life of hardened crime. I think he's posting from Statesville.

What about Elmwood Park any insights? I couldn't find much when I searched. I have heard that EP is seeing an increase of hispanic and polish residents but that's no problem with me.
