Hi, I will be working in Woodstock in a few months and am looking for the best place to buy a home. I'm looking for the same thing everybody else is....nice place, schools, low crime etc. Are the taxes in McHenry as bad as Lake? I'm hoping to find a nice home for around 300-325k. I grew up on Lake St. Clair in MI and would love to be in a boating community (Chain-o-lakes??). Ideally I wouldn't want to be more than a 30-40 min commute from Woodstock. Thanks for any suggestions.

Why not Crystal Lake? It's a great community with good schools and lots of newer shopping and restaurants. Even though it's right next door it's a far cry from Woodstock in terms of feel. It has a great older downtown area with great events and an active park district. Its on the Metra line so getting to downtown is easy.

Crystal Lake is good, straight up 14 to get into Woodstock. Also, I grew up in Johnsburg/McHenry and I LOVED it. McHenry County is fantastic. It's growing like crazy but it's amazing and it's 15-20 minutes up 120 to get to Woodstock. and you can't beat the amenities in town. Johnsburg schools are incredible ( i went to the schools, graduated 03) and it is AWESOME. If you have any kids in the elementary schools, try to get Mrs. Ann Reith. She teaches 5th grade and is my personal hero. And in the high school, get to know Mr. Rick Bailey. Another personal hero of mine. They truly made my school experiences the best time of my life. OH AND JUST TO LET YOU KNOW IF YOU WANT GOOD FOOD: Crystal Lake has a good mom and pop place called Around The Clock and a pizza/hotdog place called Tommy's II Redhots. In McHenry, there is a place open 24 hours called Fox Garden Cafe (again a mom and pop type place) and there is Bacci's pizza (the slice of pizza is LITERALLY the size of a lunch tray and their family size pizza gets up to 30 inches!!!!) and there is also a Tommy's in McHenry now.

Have any questions about McHenry County, just ask.

Camille
