Having lived with and without attached garage, attached wins every time.

No snow to knock off the car.
No searing seats in 100 degree weather.
Dry groceries.
Bad man has a harder time stealing stuff.

And personally, I hate hate hate getting rained on going from the car to the house when I wasn't expecting rain. It's only water, but yeah, I hate it.

If you have an attached garage why do you have to knock snow off the car? Why do the seats get so hot if they are in the garage?

SK,

Have you taken a look at Glenview, Northbrook, Northfield, or Deerfield. All of those areas have better schools than Highland Park, and have an abundance of homes with attached garages in your price range.

I would highly recommend you take a look at Glen Oak Acres, Northfield (You'd get New Trier), East Glenview (You'd get New Trier), and The Glen.
