There aren't any birthing centers in IL except the one that is inside the hospital in Oak Park. Most US insurance plans don't cover midwives or birthing centers, in fact midwives are still illegal in some states.

Midwifery has become a big thing here in Ontario. It's a 4 year university degree and it's pretty much a post grad course. Post grad is not required but the last time I checked a few years ago there was not one student in the course who wasn't post grad. The prenatal care they give is far superior to the regular medical system care. Your midwife is with you for the entire 9 months and they really watch over the moms to be. They monitor everything on a regular basis including things that the Drs. really don't care much about. Things like weight gain, nutrition, exercise and others. It's a much more wholistic approach to the entire pregnancy

I had midwife care overseas so I am familiar with it. I'd venture to say that the standard of care varies just as much as it does amongst doctors. I've had good and bad from both.

That is the reason the government of Ontario decided to bring the midwives into the larger medical system. The standards set are very high, the oversight and licensing are strict and it's just good all around.
