Hi, does anyone know of some cheap apartments to rent in or around Palatine? I know it's a "ritzy" kind of place, but there's gotta be something!
My ex-husband moved here to be near my kids. I'm doing fine financially, so I live in a relatively nice rental (waiting for my house to sell in KS).
But he won't be able to afford anything near my price range, and the cheapest the possible would be ideal for him.
Does anyone know the area enough to make recommendations?

There are apts on Rand (Rt 12) also, on Dundee rd. You might scope those locations. I beleive some are sec 8 in Palatine as well.

Many of the apartments around Route 12 and Dundee are rough - very rough. Cheap price apartments just about anywhere have high crime.

I've never heard Palatine refered to as "ritzy". Its a very nice city, but not in the least upper-end or glitzy. I think is really a Mayberry type of place.

I lived in an apt complex off of smith & dundee about 5 years back. It was crappy, but cheap. One notch above the baldwin & rand rd apartments. There was a murder suicide in that same complex a few years later.

About 8 minutes east of the apts. on rte 12 & rte 68 are 2 complexes on Hintz Rd. I believe it's Arlington Heights, might be Wheeling. I know staff and teachers from our church who live there and have friends live there in the past. One is Mallard Lakes?, the other is VIP. Not ritzy, but not slummy and run down either. Check these out. There is also a nice complex on rte 12 just south of IL 53. Just a block south of the Walter E. Smith store. These may be more expensive than the Hintz Rd. complexes.

Palatine is very diverse and to some could be seen as slummy, others ritzy. It is a very ecclectic community from it's people to it's restaurants and residences. In addition to the locations mentioned previously, there are also 3-flats in the downtown area that are in the $600-900 price range, depending on the size. You will also find some in-law apartments in the same vicinity and along Palatine Rd. Your best bet is to drive the area and see which neighborhood feels right for you. I lived on the north end for many years (some consider this the getto of Palatine) but as a single mom, I never had any "bad" experiences. Good luck!
