May I suggest instead of complaining about the situation, get involved in your local community to lend a hand.

I live in Glen Ellyn. Word around town some ten or fifteen years ago, was that the homeless feel "safe" in Glen Ellyn, because in neighboring Wheaton, they are picked up by the police and escorted some distance away! Obviously this is only heresay, but I've heard it from several other residents.

Actually Wheaton takes many of them in. Wheaton has the Homeless Veterans home and a PADS shelter. Plus, many of the churches take them in during the winter months. I've seen some of the same homeless people in downtown Wheaton for almost 10 years now. I don't think the police escort them out of town. I'd think Glen Ellyn churches do the same as Wheaton which is why you tend to see homeless people in both downtown areas. In Wheaton the two main shelters are within walking distance of the train station, I'd think GE would be the same.

At the same time, homeless people add nothing to a community. they only take, take, and take more from it. homeless people are known as criminals as well as drug and alcohol abusers. would you feel comfortable having your 10 year old daughter ride her bike to the library knowing there are homeless people waiting up there for her to drive on by? any decent town will allow any child to ride their bike to and from the library safely. sadly, glen ellyn apparently does not make the cut if what the OP says is true.

What an incredibly ignorant statement. Many homeless people do have substance abuse issues, but to paint them all as drunks and criminals is absurd. And to suggest that homeless people are pedophiles waiting to prey on children has absolutely no basis in reality. The homeless are no more likely waiting for your kids then anyone else in the community. Try volunteering at a shelter sometime and talk to the well dressed people who can't find a job, or the parents there with their children.

did I say all? no you said that. I said most which is an undeniable fact. and if you disagree with that clear assertion then simply you need to be informed:

Substance Abuse Growing in Homeless Population

KnowledgePlex: Alcohol and Other Drug Problems Among the Homeless: Research, Practice, and Future Directions, 1991

this is common sense.

I would estimate 8-10% of homeless adults are just down on their luck. I'd estimate another 10-20% are mentally handicapped/insane and due to horrible government decisions, they lack the help they need and the help that the should receive.

I would esitmate that 70% of the homeless population abuses alcohol, drugs, or committs crimes. Answer me this, what do homeless people contribute to a community?

maybe i will volunteer at a homeless shelter...good thought.

Actually, I did say many homeless people have substance abuse issues.

On the other hand:

I don't see the word "most" used or even implied in that statement. "homeless people are known as..." There is no qualifier here.

As for what they contribute to society? Great line of reasoning. What do the profoundly disabled contribute to society? They're all human beings who have value for that reason alone. I'm seeing the same line of reasoning from some people here that was found in Nazi Germany. If they don't contribute to society.. What's next, shall we start rounding up the homeless and disabled and send them to concentration camps?

good post, it's just a lot easier to like someone if they add something to the community that they are in instead of detracting from it. to call everyone homeless disabled is a perverse outlook on the most needy of people in our society. How dare you! If you consider a lack of discipline, will power, and fortitude as disabled then I agree with you. However, I believe a few character strength building classes can go a long way to determining whether or not a homeless individual will contribute to society sooner than later.

Sigh. I never called the homeless disabled. I was providing another example of a group of people that some people think don't contribute to society. Try to think through these comments first. And this from someone who already at least implied that the homeless are all criminals, drug addicts, alcoholics and pedophiles.

Wow, this thread makes me sad. Not all homeless folks are drug abusers and alcoholics. You've seen the headlines. Some people went from making six figures to making nothing. It's a sad state right now. Go out and lend a hand to those who are less worthy than you.
