I havent been north of Elgin in over a year along Randall until tonight. I had to run up to the Rt. 31 and 176 intersection tonight and decided to take Randall instead. Wow. I just cannot believe the development that has taken place from Elgin all the way up to Crystal Lake. Algonquin and Sleepy Hollow are unrecognizable, practically. There are the usual chains, etc, but some neat restaurants too. I just couldnt believe what I saw!

The oil companies surely love the sprawl areas.

Remember the old Hanna-Barberra cartoons like The Flinstones and The Jetsons where they'd show the characters running and the background would repeat every 2 or 3 seconds? That's what it's like driving down Randall Road from Batavia all the way up to Algonquin any more:

Applebee's, Target, Chili's, Jewel, Wal-Mart, Home Depot.

Next town over: Applebee's, Target, Chili's, Jewel, Wal-Mart, Home Depot.

How true, how very true. I would add a jiffy lube, bank and McD's to that.

But there are also some cool other joints I saw... places like the Govnor, Burnt Toast, etc. But yes, the majority are chains, but theyre done very well I must even admit. The landscaping around some of those places was ultra-cool... lots of evergreens and tall prairie grasses, made them MUCH more attractive than usual.

There is also the Village Squire, a non-chain gyro joint and a hot dog/beef joint, too. There is also some jazz lounge and an Aurelios as well. Most chain dominated as Ive said before, but also some neat joints to check out.
