Hee! It is a nice automall. We bought a car from there a few years back, too. I wouldn't live in Matteson myself, but I think it's a nice town.

But yeah, I wouldn't move too close to Chicago, if you'll be working in Merrillville, with the hastle/time/expense of travel.

At least Dyer is West of M'ville, and a bit closer to Chicago for you at least.

If you're fresh out of college, you have all the time in the world to get a job in or around Chicago, after you work a few years at this M'ville job. In the mean time, enjoy Indiana!

Hyde Park would be perfect for you. The Ryan and Bishop Ford are the only Chicago expressways without a reverse commute, so it would be quick ride to Merrillville, yet you'd be in the heart of the city (I know it's not the center of the city, but it's a totally urban environment), with good transportation options to get downtown.

But ... if you took the Bishop Ford & the Ryan you'd have to deal with I-80 which can be bumper to bumper, with no rhyme or reason, at any hour of the day and night. What might be quick 45 min. drive one day could be an hour and a half the next.

The other option from Hyde Park would be to take the Skyway to I-65 - right now (and I think for the next year) the 65/80 exchange is completely screwed up with miles of detours. Not to mention the $$$cost$$$ of the Skyway.

Lynwood is a good choice. I love living here in Lynwood. You get the best of both worlds. I can see Munster from my house! There are also a lot of big box in both Lansing and Highland,IN. However, Lynwood doesn't have many businesses yet, but we are having town meetings about building a downtown like Lansing's.The homes here are brand new. The same house you would find in Orland Park for $400,000-$600,000 , you could find here for half the price. ($250,000) There is also talk about a future Metra STAR line ending in Lynwood and going north to the far north suburbs.

Why live in Illinois? Your taxes will be higher and your commute time would not be much longer getting into Chicago than from the south burbs. No brainer to me.
