I am an African American female Chicago native who has been living in Colorado Springs, CO for the last 8 years. I am relocating back to Chicago with my 14 year old son and was thinking of areas like Grayslake, Gurnee or Round Lake Beach, IL. Can anyone offer suggestions about living in those areas? My friend bought a house in Grayslake and her description is very similiar to mines but I will be renting initally; the best deals for my taste and budget have been found in Round Lake Beach - would it be a safe community in terms of racial structure?? Any insight would be appreciated - thanks in advance!!!

RLB is not a particular nice area, regardless of demographics. I would stick with Grayslake or Gurnee if possible. IMNSHO, Gurnee would be a better choice for an African-American Professional w/ kids.

RLB is a bad area.I know Gurnee has a good amount of Rentals available, which is hard to find in most suburbs nowadays. What's your budget?

As to the racial structure, it is heavily hispanic. Many of the billboards are Spanish only. They have the most authentic Mexican food I have found outside of Central America so it's great to grab a bite there.

But..., the schools suck.

If you are looking in Round Lake for rentals, I'm assuming your budget is on the lower end. Gurnee is pretty expensive and I'm betting Grayslake is as well comparatively.

What is your max in regards to monthly rent?

Wow - thanks - I seem to get the most positive feedback regarding Gurnee!! Just seems a bit limited in terms of housing rentals.

I'm trying not to exceed $1500. The Round Lake area is bad?? Maybe that is why I find so many rentals available:-(

Yes, it is bad. If your budget is $1500 look at Gurnee
or Grayslake. Good options that are safe. Stay out of areas though that are part of Waukegan
schools.

You are golden with $1500/mo. I was thinking you were stuck at less than a $1000/mo.

Check out this one:

33670 N Royal Oak Ln APT 201,
Grayslake, IL 60030

have you look into Libertyville? School is better there and Not that far from Grayslake. Buffalo Grove have even better school but maybe more $$$ and not as close to Grayslake.
