I'm going to be visiting Chicago for a while without a car. I need some recommendations on suburbs that are safe, bikable, and near a metra line.

Most suburbs that have good Metra service are also decent places to ride a bicycle and generally pretty safe. The thing that'll probably be the determining factor in your situation is which such suburb also has decent options for hotel as I would think you'll need to sleep someplace...
The bad news is that if you really want to stay in a suburb and take the Metra into the city and bicylce you will be up against a bit of shortage of great options. Your best compromise MIGHT be Des Plaines where there is good Metra service via the UP-NW line and a decent number of affordable hotels that are safe. Arguably this route leaves the least exposed to what is pretty heavy traffic near O'Hare --
