Hi all,

I'm relocating within a week from Brooklyn NY to right outside Milwaukee. My wife's got a fantastic job at Kohl's HQ which prompted the relocation. I've been able to successfully transfer my Role in Aon NYC to AonHewitt in Lincolnshire IL.

I was curious if anyone knew of a friend or friend of a friend that commutes (commuted) from Milwaukee to Lincolnshire.

I'm curious if there's any rideshares or public transportation to lessen the burden that is the daily grind commuting 50+ miles.

Any and all advice is welcome.

Thanks,
Steve

The real difficulty is not JUST the distance but the fact that income tax in WI is quite a bit higher so for a two income family the usually direction of travel is from IL to WI...

The other thing is that trying to coordinate transit sharing across state lines is really tough unless you just hit "Craig's List" or something because there is not much in common in how the IL and WI agencies ride share stuff work.

Thanks Chet.... I wasn't aware that WI had a higher income tax than IL... Just another setback in my learning curve

Lincolnshire is in Lake County about 35 miles from downtown Chicago. There is a train from Kenosha, WI to the Chicago Metra which then comes into the City. It looks like Pace Metra route #581 operates a bus to Lincolnshire Corporate Center. Maybe???. It also has a Vanpool and Employer shuttle. Pace Suburban Bus Service The site is not easy to navigate.

There must be someone. I know that about 20 years ago the Tollway completed the interchange at Rt 137 for all the Wisconsin residents commuting to Abbott. Later many transferred to Hospira at Rt 22. Also checkout https://www.pacerideshare.com/en-US/

The effective income tax rate of a married couple making 200K in Wisconsin is 6.3%. Compare that to 5% in IL and it's really not that big a difference. Then take into consideration the difference in sales tax: 5.6% in Milwaukee County versus 8% in Lake County IL and the ludicrous property taxes in both areas (which you're probably used to in NY) and the overall tax burden in the Chicago/Milwaukee area not significantly different on one side of the border versus the other.

Any way you can work from home? If not full time at least a couple times a week? I'm a former AonHewitt employee that worked at the Lincolnshire branch. I was able to get a full time AWP to work from home. If not, there is an internal forum where you can hook up with people car pooling. There used to be a good number of people living around the Kenosha area that travel together down to Lincolnshire.

My suggestion is to live somewhere SOUTH of wifes work close to I-94 to make your commute easier. I don't know enough to recommend specific towns or neighborhoods, maybe the WI forum can help with that. Starting your commute from Racine area instead of a suburb north of downtown Milwaukee can make a big difference in keeping your commuting sanity.

Great thoughts all! I'm very close to an I94 Extension in WI, making the drive relatively easy and all highway (until I run into an Accident or construction). One forum member enlightened me to a saying you have in the are... there are two seasons in this region, winter and construction!

I'll keep you posted, and please post any commute tips and tricks, as the only commuting I've done in the past decade is via NYC Subway or Commuter Train.

Best,
Steve

I'm actually looking at a similar move and commute--from MKE to Gurnee, IL. I remember you were commuting a similar path. How is it going?

And how are you liking it out there?

Hope all is well. Cheers.
