We may be relocating w/our 2 small kids for a job in Lincolnshire, but would like to live somewhere within a 30-45 minute commute that is more affordable (up to $500K for a 4 bedroom 2 bath) and that has a diverse, somewhat liberal neighborhood. Any help?

Try Buffalo Grove, Arlington Heights, Vernon Hills, Libertyville, and the parts of Mundelein with school district 73 or 79.

Try renting in Lincolnshire first. Then buy the home. Schools are great. Prices are coming down. I have a 4bdrm for rent that is also available for sale in Lincolnshire.

It is a boringly safe area. Large lots, none-exist low income types, challenging transportation issues, little or no public gathering spots, large corporate office tracts, smaller subdivisions of mostly custom homes all help to keep funding for police service high and need for same low. Sure there is some property crime, and technically a 'domestic dispute' might be a violent crime, but mostly that is some over drinking spouse yelling at their poor money-manager of a 'partner'...

No real concerns to speak of...

Have home $ come down enough in Highland Park and Deerfield to meet OP's price range?

There are about 10 4bed/2bath in HP that are in the $450,000-$500,000 range. Most are split level or 1970's to early 1980's. Most do not have updated kitchens. They are on decent sized lots. I don't know about the particular neighborhoods of these houses (whether or not they are diverse or liberal). HP as a whole is fairly liberal. It's not particularly diverse, although some of the schools have a hispanic population because the town to the north of Highland Park, Highwood, utilizes HP schools and Highwood has a significant hispanic population. HP is not less expensive than Lincolnshire. You will definitely get more house for your money in Lincolnshire.

If you want an old, fixer upper on a nice lot in a great area, there's a house on St. John's in the Ravinia area of Highland Park that's worth looking at. I think it's about $450,000.
