Hi, I'm a single 39 year old woman, no kids, relocating for work to Northbrook, been living in Switzerland for 7 years. Realise life will change drastically (maybe to the better, who knows?) I would like understand the chances to find an area to live close to the lake, forest/parks for morning runs, biking (street bike or mountain bikes), I dont mind the suburb if there are some cafe/bars, gyms, shopping areas, cinema, I'm ok. Would like to meet new people but don't think I'd go out alone in Chicago anyway. Would pref not to drive more than 30 min, if feasable? I used to live right on Lake Erie, west of Cleveland, loved the lake ,guess this life style wont be affordable in the Chicago area, looking fwd to hear from someone that could give me some recommendations.thanks!

Welcome to Illinois.
You need to post a price range and area in Northbrook where the job is. There are wonderful lakefront burbs that suit your needs. Whether price does is yet to be determined.

I recommend Evanston. Not far from Northbrook in terms of commute though you would have to tell where in Northbrook for us to give a time estimate. It is a college town, so probably more younger adults than older single ones, but you can find friends there too.

Good cafes, stores, gyms, movie theaters, etc. Northwestern's Campus is available for running and biking as well as the entire path down the lakefront. Beaches are available too.

You can certainly go out alone in Chicago. I did it all the time and I am a 5 ft tall woman. You just need to be aware of your surroundings. Evanston has easy access to the city because there are three metra stops and the elevated train. There are also suburban buses around Evanston and out to the suburbs (that will take longer though for a commute type situation, so a car is advisable).

Also, Evanston is a very International community because of the graduate students at Northwestern. My son years ago had a friend from Sweden in his first grade classroom. There are many people from various nations there.

Good luck!

Thanks so much for your help!! Thats great to know Its sounds like Evanston is a nice place. The office is suppose to be very close to the Botanic garden, Glencoe Golf Club. The rent I believe I will be able to afford is ca 1500-1600 US, need "only" a 2bath, 2BR, a condo unit with a deck would be great. A community pool/gym would be a big plus. I don't know how common it is the people do sub leases of condos/single homes in this area? Also good to hear that its an international community as well. Are there what they called in the Cle area, Metroparks, large forests with hiking/runnnig/biking paths around that area or would i need to go more "inland" to find that? thanks a bunch!

I would definitely second Evanston. I think for commute purposes you might want to try to stick to areas like Downtown Evanston and northward, as you'll need access to the Edens Expressway.

You won't find forests in Evanston or along the lake. There are, however, forest preserves not too far away.

Hiking and biking trails abound along the lake front - you can go all the way from north Evanston to downtown Chicago on bike paths except for a short stretch from the south end of Evanston to Byrn Mawr and you can still bike their, but it's not a bike path as such.

Here's a map

Thank you so much for all this useful information! It sounds great. How are the suburbs north of Northbrook along the lake? Lake Forest? Looking at the map, it looks like there are lots of golf courses, parks, private beaches etc. Are there any parks, marinas, beaches accessible for the public? Along Lake Erie west of down town Cle there were a few but much of the land was private with huge million dollar homes with direct access to the lake, though it was a beautiful scenery jogging along Lake Road, not crowded and peaceful. Thanks a lot for all your useful help
