We moved to the area 9 years ago and we rented in elgin first in a "Good" area @ Randall and highland and had someone try to break into our home while I was home alone with our the 3 young kids and pregnant with #4. I would NEVER buy a home in Elgin!! However that being said although Highland woods is considered a elgin it is unincorporated ( I believe) and I would and have considered it , then Gilberts, then Sleepy Hollow, and Pingree grove (were we are now and have been for 4 years) we love Pingree the only down side is it is a little harder to get to a store if you forget something but it is an awesome place to raise kids. Gilberts was nice but didn't have a pool, Loved Sleepy Hollow but found they have a lot of issues with water. Our home flooded regularly and the seller did not disclose that (we were doing a rent to own)My husband worked as a Police Officer in town and asked the representing agent because he knew water was an issue and they owners didn't disclose the water issue to the agent either. Whatever you do stay away from the public schools in this area (Our kids attend Westminster so schools aren't an issue for us). I would look at Barrington they have great public schools if your going public schools! If your working downtown I would also check out the North shore towns like Northbrook, Winnetka, Glenview ect... you cant get better schools or a better area!
