According to my husband and some others this means that we will be robbed, beaten within an inch of our lives and that our children will grow up having no advantage in life and dumb as a rock due to the poor schools. IS this true? We are looking to buy our first house in about a year and have started to look at some areas we're interested in. My husband works in Naperville (please don't tell me to buy in Naperville--I think I would rather have my eyes gouged out than live there). I like charm, I like old neighborhoods, and I like diversity--but we don't have a lot to spend on a first house. Any thoughts?

Regardless if Elgin is a nice place to live or not, I would think it would be kind of a long commute to Naperville. If a town similar to Elgin is what you are looking for, Aurora is much closer to Naperville and I think of it as "similar" to Elgin. Smaller towns with more affordable housing and downtown areas where you might find some older housing stock you may want to check out would be Oswego, Plainfield, Elburn, and maybe Yorkville. (Although these towns have a lot of new subdivisions around the older downtown areas, not sure if that is a problem.)

Definitely check out Aurora. Not only will the commute be far better, but Aurora is much bigger then Elgin, which means more neighborhoods to choose from. You're probably more likely to find an older home in a safe neighborhood there, plus I think the schools are at least a little bit better in Aurora. Also the Burlington Northern Metra line in Aurora has more service then the line to Elgin, and the BN has a stop near Brookfield Zoo.

Thanks for the suggestions. I think Aurora might be the perfect solution--shorter commute and better schools. I've been looking online at older homes in Aurora and there is a great selection for under $200,000 which is just what we're looking for. Granted, we're about a year away from buying a first home, but I have a feeling that the perfect home will be ready for us when we are. Thanks again!

Elgin is kind of a far commute to naperville - also there are old houses in West Chicago for reasonable $. And many residents send their kids to parochial or private schools if they don't like the public schools where they live.

just make sure that when you check out aurora, you don't choose the east side, close to downtown. not a good area. i think you are definitely right to avoid elgin. problems with schools and city services.
