If you up your budget to the point of finding a nice apartment in Oak Park that is probably your best option. It is not as interesting as Chicago itself but it is definitely going to be much easier to live there w/o a car than any other western suburb, especially if you are looking for something with a "Worldly" flavor -- probably are some native Venezulean professors from UIC or other schools in Oak Park.

Good Luck!

Thanks again Chet. So according to your experience. Do you think it's a good option to live in Chicago and commute everyday to Westchester ? Obviously I am going to need a car for that.

Not necessarily, but transit service to Westchester is weak. I have known a few people who do it, driving.

Like pvande states, the problem with places like Oak Brook, Westchester, and most other suburban office parks is that transit if geared toward getting folks NOT to such place but toward the much denser office towers in the Loop.

A handful of firms in towns that have decent rail links for reverse commute AND employers that want to provide for their city dwelling workers do run shuttle but I do not believe Westchester is in that category currently. Maybe you can work for some transit equality...

I gotta agree with the other posters, if I had to live without a car and was working in Westchester, I'd want to live in a very walkable neighborhood like Oak Park. You may even want to check out LaGrange since it has some decent (walking distance) access to stores, restaurants, groceries, etc and Pace too on LaGrange Road. You've got a tight rental budget, but it could be done.
