For some reason when people say Chicago suburbs I usually think of Schaumburg. I olny been there like once or twice at the woodfeild mall. Its the steryotypical suburbia IMO. Next is Oak Park for older suburbs

It is probably easier to think of what communities are not suburbs of Chicago. In order to meet that criteria a city needs a few things:
1) A employer base
2) A first class library system
3) Cultural amenities (theater), museum etc
4) Restaurants from QSR to cloth napkin in several categories
So Aurora is not a suburb although it is losing fine dining and even mid tier dining and is starting to trend to being a burb as you really need to go to The City for a decent meal or Naperville
Naperville has grown from a suburb into its own and is a world class city in its own right. St. Charles is trending that way. Oswego is a burb for example.
