Are you saying she will not be happy in East Lake because she is caucasian? Is there a racial issue with caucasians living in East Lake?
My family was looking in the area of Glass and Chamberlin.

I believe the unhappiness came from all the discussion about crime in the area. Ethnicity was mentioned at the beginning and never repeated. As the OP kept returning to issues about security, it's probable that if she moved to the area she would be constantly worrying and therefore unhappy.

For what it's worth, this thread is almost two years old. The last activity from both McMar and gizmoviki73 is from 2008, so I doubt you'll get an answer from either of them.

But the neighborhood really hasn't changed in that time. According to City-Data it's still a racially diverse area, but the majority of residents are white:

I am originally from Chattanooga and have worked in that area. From what I remember it was one of the rougher areas of the city.

My mother was a teacher at East Lake Elementary for two years and was hired because the schools reading scores were so low compared to the national average. My mother has a heart of gold and tried her best to get through to the kids but the situation just wore out during her tenure there. I heard many stories from her about how many of the parents could even be located in the neighborhood and in many cases no one was staying with the kids because the parents were in jail.

My grandfather also lived in that area for 2 decades and moved not to long ago. I count about three times he was robbed at gunpoint in his own driveway. He was stubborn and never wanted to leave.

I am not saying the whole area is bad but ask any local and I think you will find it is one of the less desirable areas of the city.

I agree with the other poster that there is some beautiful old homes in that area.

Hi I have lived in eastlake for almost 23 years not and I'm almost 23 years old. So I'll have a lot to say about the "hood" Well for starters I'm not being racist BUT east lake is like 75%black if not more 20% Mexican and 5% white (what I'm getting at is there's more black and Mexican here than white ppl) But anyways ppl come to the park in DAY and NIGHT and have SEX on the picnic tables on the playground equipment, they do drugs down there. There's a vid on youtube of millennium taxi driver having sex at night in the back of the CAB, there's a vid on youtube of ADT workers getting high over here, and the cops do nothing. i called the cops one day when i came home because there was a strange car in-front of my house and my dogs were barking at it. well like i said i called the cops they came got the 2 naked ppl out there car. the guy was 25 had not id the girl was 15 had no id and they let em go.!.!.! So yeah go figure. This is a ****ty neighborhood. trust me don't come here

What about the area on the other side of Rossville Blvd.? (west of Rossville, N. of the GA state line)
Is that considered to be East Lake?
I think I have heard it called Boulevard Park.
How is that area?

I grew up on 12th Avenue (4110) back in the 40s and 50s. In the 80s, I sold the family home.

The population there has definitely changed. The house I sold is a rental now, and the person
who actually owns the home seems to have kept it in good repair.

The 4100 block seems to have survived well as most of the current residents (renters or owners)
appear to still have pride in taking care of these homes.

East Lake Park is fine in the daylight but even though I lived in that neighborhood for twenty-one years, I certainly would not go there at night.

There is one very active church at the northeast end of Twelfth Avenue (New City East Lake) although most of the other churches that once were there are closed and the members relocated.

East Lake is not a good area. Neither is Tunnel Blvd (North Brainerd), East Chattanooga, or Alton Park. You can do a lot better north of the river, in lower Hixson, or Middle Valley. Gang violence is creeping its way toward East Lake and is a major problem in the Tunnel Blvd area.
