Chattanooga: From 'dirtiest city' to Internet haven [cnet.com]
Quote:
[...] CHATTANOOGA, Tennessee -- It was once so polluted here that people had to drive through town with their headlights on all day. You could smell the stench from the tannery and heavy metal foundries in town before reaching the city limits. In 1969, news anchor Walter Cronkite dubbed it "the dirtiest city in America."

[...] The old Chattanooga is long gone. Today, the city has some of the cleanest air and water in the region. Outdoor Magazine has twice in the past four years named the city the "best town ever."

I live in Florida and have been up in Massachusetts for the past 6 weeks. I'm driving back to Florida this week, and no longer want to drive down I-95. I can no longer stand driving thru the Boston Washington corridor. So I'm heading inland abit down I-81 thru Virginia. I think I will hop on over to Chattanooga and take I-75 down to Florida. It will be a nice change of scenery, and I would like to visit Chattanooga.

Most crime statistics cannot be compared across different locations. All they really tell you is whether or not the local police is being honest with reporting. If someone robs a store and in the process beats someone up and kills two people, in Chattanooga that's reported as four (or more) crimes. In some locations it's only reported as one. Yes, there are bad crime areas, and yes there are gangs, and yes both violent and property crimes happen. Just like with any city or with any small town.

In spite of the media fear mongering, crime nationwide is at near historic lows.

As for the article, I can promise you that no one, other than publicists working for EPB or the city, ever refers to our local internet as "The Gig". Also Urban Stack may be the fanciest burger it town, but it's far from the "best".
