From what I've read, Chattanooga rarely gets snow that sticks on the ground very long. Are there any mountains (say 3000 ft or greater) close by where you can buy land and have a cabin? It looks like Gatlinburg is about 2.5 hours away. Anything closer? Thanks for any help/advice you can offer.

Not really. The Gatlinburg, N Carolina and N Georgia Mtns are your best bet. If we get a decent show it will hold on longer on the our mtn's but only for a few days.

I know that even in Gatlinburg there isn't any snow that lasts. There may be some snow that stays a little longer on Mount LeConte and such but those are in the national park - no one lives there - and some of those mountains aren't even accesible by roads. In fact the only way to get to the Mount LeConte Lodge is via a hike that isn't particularly easy. Ober Gatlinburg has a tiny mountain - hill, really - to ski on but that is because of snow-making efforts. Closest mountains that get any sort of meaningful snow is in West Virginia.
