Hello all my co-worker and I are both new to the city of Charlotte and we were wondering why is there no retail uptown. I know there are shops in the BOA and Wachovia buildings but they are not open during the weekend. Where are the stores like Macy's etc. In most cities that is not the case for a downtown not to have retail. I told her I would ask on here. Is there a reason why?
Well I know that retail downtown was discussed at one point in time. But nothing ever came of it. Maybe that'll change with the influx of folks now living there.
There used to be alot of retail downtown in the 80's. All of the buses used to stop down there , and it was alot more populated. Add a few robberies , murders , and similar happenings , and the 'neckties' became even tighter , shutting down all outside retail , save for a few places , and replacing it with wannabe copies of establishments in other places. The end result is cheesiness at its worse , coupled with a police state mentality that demands everyone go home after any festivities are over. If you don't you will likely be tasered , shot with rubber pellets , or arrested for 'trespassing'. Downtown used to be known as the city's 'livingroom' , but it is reserved for certain persons.
