Hi, Im an RN in my late 20's hoping to relocate my family to NC. I will be visiting NC for the first time in Jan. I have been doing an extensive research online, but seeing is believing! When it comes to North vs. South Charlotte which is better as far as low crime, school systems and close to "city life." I am now interested in Cabarrus county. Can anyone tell me of good apts or new homes to live in this county? Any lists of suburbs that have a good reputation in this county? What elementary schools are good there? We have a toddler and plan on living in our new home long term, so the elementary school choice is important. Is Cabarrus county is close driving distance to the city of Charlotte. My husband and I like the city life but do not want to live directly in the middle of it (traffic etc). Also, since Jan will be my first visit can someone please let me know what areas I should NOT visit due to high crime? I know this is a lot to answer all at once, thanks!

I'll be the first of many to ask where you will be working?

Stay away from those darn Yankee North Charlotteans. We in the South are much nicer and they are always trying to impose their ways upon us.

Matthews, NC is a good suburb. It takes about 30 minutes to get to Uptown from Matthews. It is too hard to give any advice about apts or homes unless we know what price range you are looking for.

Matthews, Mint Hill, Ballentyne, Steele Creek, Huntersville and Concord/Kannapolis are good suburbs.

South Charlotte would be better because it is more mature as a neighborhood as North Charlotte is still in its growing stage with all the growing pains (construction, lack of sidewalks).

The 'bad" areas are north tryon/sugar creek area, hickory grove area, eastland, anywhere along eastway drive and west charlotte

If I were a young mother again with little kids, I would chose the Blakeney area in South Charlotte. It's full of young, newcomer families. Matthews is nice too.

I think there are things you'll like about either area but the deciding factor, for me at least, would be where you will be working/commute time.

As for your question on Cabarrus County...I happen to live in Cabarrus County (Did my screen name give it away? ) and have 2 elementary school aged children. We are very happy here and pleased with the area.
There are plenty of nice neighborhoods to choose from and some nice apartments as well. There are lots of threads you can read if you search this forum that will hopefully help you out. But of course nothing beats seeing it for yourself!

Best of Luck
