We're new to NC and I have to get my driver's license tomorrow. Can I register my car with the new temporary driver's license or do I have to wait till I get my permanent license? I can't find the answer to that on the NCDOT website. Thanks...

This has changed from when I changed my license. If you pass, I would ask them when they hand you the temporary.
you HAVE to have a permanent license not a temporary one. (We asked when we registered our cars 2 weeks ago.)
Thanks, karenew, how long did it take to get your permanent license? And, if you registered your cars already, which office did you go to? Would you recommend going there? Thanks for the info.
if you got your license before August, they were able to give you a license immediately. They started sending ALL licenses to Raleigh first, for verification purposes. (this even includes renewals)
It took us about 8 business days to receive them.
We went to the Brookshire office. It will take about an hour, depending on the line. They don't take debit or credit cards. I know that for our license, they didn't take checks that had to be routed out of state, no idea if the same rule applies for registering cars.
We ended up paying about $450 (combined) to register our cars. (the one time use Highway Use Tax is 3% of vehicles worth with a cap of $150.)
Be sure to take all your paperwork with you
* Title if you own car
* Lien holder name/address if you don't
* Car mileage (they will take your word for it)
* Make/model of your car
* Proof of insurance
* Driver's license
There is an ATM in the registration area for your use if you didn't bring enough cash. There is a $3 fee (plus whatever your bank might charge) for using it. (We didn't bring enough cash--eek!)

What is it with places around CLT that don't take credit cards? I run into that more here than anywhere else in the country that I travel to.
