Ok, I have a house in Union County and am not there right now. But I looked at my water bill and it is $264.00. All I am doing is watering the lawn. It says I used 30,000 gallons. Does this sound right?? I am going to get my neighbor to check out the house and the sprinkler clock, but it didn't seem right to me. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

For a month? How often are you watering? Did you get a fine? We got one last year (a fine) and they tacked it onto the bill. I live in UC as well. That seems high to me tho.

I live in UC and irrigate about once a wk, used 14,000 galons last month and bill was $102. They have a tiered billing system, rate goes up as you use more gallons. Basically they are trying to discourage or burden those that irrigate. My yard is one of the greenest in my neighborhood. Unless your yard is over a 1/2 acre, it seems like alot of irrigation to use 30,000 gallons, especially with the rainfall this month. I suppose a leak could also cause your big water use, or a billing mistake.

I water twice a week which is what the restriction calls for. 5 zones. I just think it is rediculously high especially since I am not there and only irrigate.

2x/week + 5 zones, How long each zone? It sounds about right. Water is very expensive in Union county. I got a similar bill last summer with 1x/week restrictions on 7 zones which ran for about 1 1/2 hrs total. I also snuck in a few extra.

I'm watering about 30 minutes each zone twice a week. When I saw 30,000 gallons thats when I freaked out. But, if it sounds right then it is what it is. I am waiting for my neighbor to call me back to see what his bill is and see what he is doing concerning watering time, etc. Maybe I can cut down since it is Bermuda Sod..I don't know. They say it is draught resistant but I don't want to have a brown lawn just to save a few bucks.

30,000 is excessive...far more than any residential home should use in a month. Your grass does not need that much water to survive. If you don't live there, it could also be a less obvious issue too...like a toilet that runs every 5 minutes, or a very slow leak outside, or a broken sprinkler head that just gushes when it's on.

Why don't you guys just let your lawn go dormant for a month or two. I'm not a hippy but 30k gallons of water to keep your lawn green? Wow.

You may have a leak in your underground sprinkler system. This happened to me two years ago and I completely freaked out. Turn off all water in your home, including the ice machine. Then look at your water meter. If the little triangle is moving, even ever so slowly, you have a leak. If so, I would call the vendor who installed your irrigation system to troubleshoot the leak.
