Well, I don't think it is so much about the house size as it is about usage. I am one person, no lawn watering and my bill including storm water is $18-20/month.

Union County is a lot higher. We live on a quarter acre with a 3500 sq foot home. Our water bills have been close to $200 the last two months, and that's with very little irrigation.

Pricing structures vary by county. I live in Union Cty and we have a 'tiered' pricing structure. The magic # for us is 18,000 gallons per billing cycle (32 days). If you go over 18K then you're charged I believe $9.50 for each 1000 gallons after that!

Check your water meter either daily or weekly to get an idea where and how your using most of your water....

Here is the breakdown for union county
Tier 1…..2.10 per 1000 up to 3000 gallons
Tier 2…..2.45 per 1000 up to 5000 gallons
Tier 3…..3.45 per 1000 up to 4000 gallons
Tier 4…..5.45 per 1000 up to 6000 gallons
Tier 5…..9.45 per 1000 no limit just assume the position

Lets say you use 20000 gallons a month, not hard to do if you have a large lot with irrigation.

Tier 1 would read $6.30
Tier 2 would read $12.25
Tier 3 would read $13.80
Tier 4 would read $32.70
Tier 5 would read $18.90
Water base charge $5.00
Total water bill 88.95

Something to know about union county city water at least in Weddington is the water pressure varies depending on the time of day. Probably the same for most city water, but it is really noticeable where I live. If I water at 12:01 am I use 2500 gallons. At 9:00pm the same timer settings I use 1100 gallons.
Also when you are watering with the hose the pressure builds to where it seems like the hose is going to burst then when you open it up it sprays like crazy then it sprays about half as far. I wonder what that pressure fluctuation is doing my plastic pipes?

The water pressure issue is something my home inspector mentioned. The house we are buying has a pressure regulator. He says it should be set to below 80 (I think) and that the pressure in Union County is usually high because they are increasing it to supply all the new housing. He also said that if the pressure is too high then warranties on your appliances are likely to be voided. Also, if you have underground irrigation systems, the clay soil expansion and contractions can open up a lot of leaks. Not sure how to check on that without digging. Thanks for the price schedule RedNC - makes it easier to comprehend what everyone is talking about.. Also is it a monthly bill or quarterly?

it is monthly. You can pay by check. If you pay by cc, you'll be charged a 4.95/month extra fee. If you do automatic payments every month, they'll waive the fee (which is what I do).

This information is all on the Union county website. You just need to dig...
