Yesterday, my neighbor came to me with a petition he wanted me to sign. Apparently they had a meeting at the Berewick Manor House and they are going to submit these signatures to the City of Charlotte so we are not annexed until a couple of more years. I in particular, don't think it is going to work. Charlotte has a history of annexation that rivals JAX when it took over Duval County. Do you think we have a chance of winning this?

no.

eta: Charlotte just takes. They don't care what the citizens want. They just take and take.

FWIW, Charlotte politicians do not listen.
We voted the arena down 2x, and they built it anyway.
Glad the main tenant is doing well...

Hey, I empathize with anyone facing a higher tax bill but I had to chuckle at your post considering your handle. CLT King, welcome to Charlotte proper... the rest of us serfs need some help shouldering the burden!

I gotta ask...

Why would you buy somewhere that clearly let everyone know (with great enthusiasm from the sales staff) they would be annexing within a couple years if you don't want to be annexed???

So instead of moving somewhere further away from the city limits or out of bad 'ole Meck county altogether, you move somewhere that others also moved into fully expecting (and most likely wanting) to be annexed...and bring up a "petition" to try and slow or stop it???

This is right up there with the folks that moved within eyesight of Bruton's racing mecca and complained about noise!

Are you saying you weren't aware of the annexation plans?

My god, I feel like I have a bull eye’s sign in my chest. So much blame on why I move there!?! I knew Berewick was going to get annexed sooner or later. I know the City can't be stop. I know that my neighbor and the rest of those present in the meeting were wasting their time (main reason why I stayed home). I just wanted to hear your opinion on Charlotte's annexation tendencies and see if maybe one of you had tried the petition thing as well.....

And just to clarify this conception of Charlotte beign the big bad wolf on the block that is North Carolina, it is actually state laws that allow municipalities in NC to annex relatively easily (compared to other states).

On one hand, it's a good thing. It prevent huge gaps or jagged and confusing city limit lines. Look at most cities in the Central Florida region (Orlando, for example). The city limits will actually run through an older neighborhood and skip one parcel, contain the next, skip another, contain the next two...and so on. Police actually have to stand there and figure out if County Deputies should handle a call or if City PD should (they still have a separate Sheriff's office and City PD down there).

On the other hand, sometimes folks have a legitimate reason for not wanting or needing annexation and should have a say...but going back to the above point, it should be en mas and not by individual 0.2 acre lots.

But to cap it off (I'm still perplexed from my initial read and post last night), if you're against being annexed, don't move somewhere that is already scoped and locked onto by the city's annexing barrel.

I knew my post would probably be taken personally, and I apologize for a personal misconception, if any. The "you" in my post was meant to be a generic person (not a specific poster here) and the tone was supposed to be completely curious, not bashing.

But the question does still stand...

And I'll add to it:
What is the reason for "delaying" the annexation? If I'm not mistaken (I rented in Berewick for nearly 1 year), all city services except for trash pickup are being provided already.

I really don't know why they would want to delay the annexation. It seems pointless. Maybe some of the residents want to sell and leave to Union Co....? not sure. When I bought in Berewick, I knew annexation was coming, but I liked the Community and all the ammenities it offers. The only difference between the City area and ours is that our street signs don't have the little Crown!!
