Hola folks, well I'm on way to Charlotte on Monday and thanks to all who answered the relocation post. I've narrowed it down to three areas and a few complexes. There is a great TINY place in Uptown for 1150 but it can barely be called a one bedroom. We're single profs so it might be nice to stay there for a bit... while we adjust to Charlotte... and I'll be on my own for the first 6 months. Problem is the owner doesn't want to do a six month lease... understandable. I found a beautiful looking place right on Lake Wylie that is only 7 miles from work, and that would be great but fear is that I'll be sort of lonesome. Then there's the Atkins Circle Complex in Ballentyne, along with a few other places. Will look at all of these areas but any thoughts on these areas? Frankly, I am really trying to rent from individuals as opposed to management companies. They charge you non refundable fees that are awful, which is my perspective coming from boston. Hey, we may pay 3500 bucks to move into a studio but at least you get that back in your last month rent and your security! AND THEN they want to charge me a non refundable pet fee... ok ok, AND a rental fee. I draw the line at paying a pet rental fee... I know things unique accross geographical areas but hey, a gal has to have bottom line! haha! Thanks again and I really appreciate any feedback! Can't wait to arrive at last!
OH... separate post, I'm sure... but anyone know a cheap furniture store (i'll be looking at yard sales as well)? Only have two years in the area so not interested in investing for the long term heirloom at this time!
For two single professors, I would narrow it down to Uptown and Lake Wylie. Ballantyne is much more family oriented and personally I hate the traffic in there.
Between Lake Wylie and Uptown...man that is hard. Is the place "on" the lake or "near" the lake? If it was on the lake, and you make friends easily, I would lean toward the lake. The lake is a very social spot in the spring/summer/fall and if you can find some friends with a boat...you are golden! If you have an extra $10k, you could buy a used boat and make your own friends (the best friends are friends with boats!).
Now if the place is "near" the lake, I would lean heavily to uptown. I think uptown is a great place for single folks to live, especially newcomers.
For furniture, why not try Craigs List if you are just looking to furnish a apartment?
Just a personal preference...if you wanna move Uptown...check out 4th Ward & 3rd Ward too.
Ballantyne is very nice but very suburban and quite a ways from Uptown. I live Uptown and work in Ballantyne. Lake Wylie is very nice too...but quite a ways from Uptown too.
...but I was also going to suggest that if you want to send me a DM of the place you are considering renting on Lake Wylie...I would be more than happy to tell you what the area is like (I happen to live off Lake Wylie)....oh and I'm not a realtor.
Thanks all, very sound advice indeed. Ballantyne is in fact the furthest from work for me. I hope we find something nice! Have to live there for a while! I really appreciate all the great advice!
Best bet for the money is the Birkdale Village area. Its not what you have listed but something to check out. Rent an appartment and enjoy the lifestyle of the village.

Lake Wylie Complex is at Queens Harbor Drive at Shopton Road! Looks beautiful and is on the lake!
I really like the Yachtsman Club! We are trying to get our retired In-Laws to buy a place there! We actually looked into buying there but that was before 160 connected to I-485 and would have meant a crappy commute for me.
I guess it really depends on what you want to do. I would love to have a view of the lake 4 seasons a year but I am also married with a toddler so "going out" is limited for me so the lack of things at Lake Wylie isn't a problem.
But with Rivergate open with some restuarants and bars, T-Bones, places in Arsley, etc, I think you would have enough options to keep you happy.
