Finding a home in that price range in a "nicer" neighborhood is not that easy IMO but, there is a home in the Cheshunt neighborhood (28269) for sale for 146- with David Cox as the school, which is a good one... Good luck with your search
I live in a very nice neighborhood on the edge of Indian Trail in Monroe, Union county with homes that are in the 150 to 180K price range. They have nice size yards and space between the homes, most have crown molding, chair rails, 10 foot ceilings, brick fronts, 2 inch faux wood blinds, lots of windows, spacious floor plans etc., walking trails, community play center, HOA.The neighborhood is zoned for Rocky River and/or Shiloh elementary and Sun Valley Middle and High school. Some of the larger homes (2000+ sq ft) in the neighborhood are now in the 190s but there are other neighborhoods out here that are similar.
You have options at the lake (LKN). I know of several neighborhoods in Cornelius in that price range that safety concerns are a non issue. Check out Heritage Green, Oakhurst, and Alexander Chase. They're all Gandy communities but fit your price range and the last thing I think about up here is safety (well, I actually always think about my family's security, but I never feel threatened up here whatsoever).
There are a few older established neigborhoods in Indian Trail/Stallings/Matthews which go to Porter Ridge/Hemby Bridge Elem/PRMS/PRHS. Some are very nice, one of which comes to mind is Bent Creek and Oak Grove. I know someone who just bought a house about 1900 sq ft for $180 in Oak Grove.
If you want to stay in Charlotte, I would look in the 2869 area. NE Charlotte. David Cox, Highland Creek and there is a new school opening in the fall (Hucks road). For subdivisions, try those off Hubbard Rd OakKnoll, Hubbard Woods or Cheshunt, Highland Creek etc... You can find a lot in that area.
