Anyone curious about where the new Monroe Bypass road is going, and how far along they are will appreciate these aerial images.

First pic is the northern end entrace, just before Indian Trail-Fairview road.

Second pic is winding behind Extreme Ice Center, then crossing Indian-Trail Fairview road.

Third is running paralell to Secrest Shortcut Road, almost crossing Sardis Church road.

Last is the southern terminus rejoining 74 just east of Forest Hills High School.

Looks awesome, will be fantastic for beach trips!

Nice! Looks like that was a great day for flying.

I've been taking 218 through Mint Hill to Polkton for a long time to avoid Monroe, but it will be interesting to see if this makes it a quicker trip.

Looks like a beautiful aircraft, and more substantial than the Cessna 172 - not that i've flown one, but a close friend of mine has/does.

As to the Monroe Bypass, I hope they do it right; too few lanes will spur development enough to overwhelm the road.

A much more stable aircraft than the 172 for sure; additional benefit of Monroe Bypass construction is providing area pilots an excellent smooth dirt emergency landing site in case of problems! I wonder what negative effects the bypass will have on the 74 Monroe businesses. Will it go like the parts of Independence that turned limited access? Sadly, I probably won't think twice about it as I drive 70 towards OIB....

It's only a matter of time before the Monroe Walmart gets abandoned in favor of one at an exit off the bypass.

Hmm. And the existing 74 is a bypass for old 74. Will there be yet another bypass in 30 years...

I think the current US 74 will be fine. Most of the population in Union is more along US 74, and westward towards Weddington and Waxhaw. If new development does happen along the new bypass, it will be from a new burst in population in eastern Union, which is currently mostly rural farmland.

Unlikely. The current US 74 was a new alignment to the former one (now Monroe Road/John St./Old Charlotte Road). The biggest mistake Union County did was allowing commercial development on the new route, and not on the old. The new bypass is being built as a freeway, and as a toll road, so there shouldn't be any reason for more bypasses in Union. The same is happening in Cleveland County, with the Shelby bypass.
