Most reasonable housing prices close to Uptown? (Charlotte, Huntersville: to buy, good schools)

What are the most reasonable counties or areas within a 30-40 minute commute to Uptown (Bank of America) to buy a house...(say the 200-275 range)? Any ideas would be great. We are looking for a non-"cookie-cutter" kind of community with good schools. We heard Union had good schools, but it is growing so rapidly we are afraid it would be more like a "rat race" due to the influx of growth. Any suggestions or ideas? We would love to hear from people living in Union too to get their opinion as will be visiting Charlotte for the first time in a month or so and would love to know where to look.
