Mecklenburg County's unemployment rate fell to 8.8% in March, compared to 9.3% the year before, according to the N.C. Department of Commerce. The Charlotte metro's unemployment rate was also 8.8% for the month.

Online job search site indeed state it had 52,000 job postings in April.
Carolinas HealthCare System had the most job postings that month, soliciting for 2,291 jobs through the site. Harris Teeter followed with 982 jobs, then Wells Fargo with 472.

I wonder what the negative nellies are saying on the CO comments section? Im pretty sure its a conspiracy of some sort in their eyes, those people just live to be miserable! This is good news indeed for the region! I want to see Charlotte regain its status as a hot economy where jobs are plentiful!

It was computed from this data:

Mecklenburg - March 2013
  • Labor Force - 502,149
  • Employed - 458,121
  • Unemployed - 44,028 (8.8%)

Mecklenburg - March 2012
  • Labor Force - 494,909
  • Employed - 449,051
  • Unemployed - 45,858 (9.3%)

I find the % by itself to be mostly useless without the real data behind it. In this case it looks as if Mecklenburg added ~9,000 jobs as compared to March last year. This compares to ~7,200 additional workers entering the workforce. Net positive for 12 months = ~1,760 jobs.

This is actually much better than the USA because in that case, over 400,000 people have quit looking for work as the national workforce fell by that much.

so... the % numbers are legit?

not sure how you could call them mostly useless if they are spot on.

Statistics are like bras in that they can promise a lot and can reveal very little. The unemployment percentage is mostly useless unless you look at the raw numbers that it is computed from. This is because the labor force constantly changes and unemployed people are often removed from the count.

There is wisdom in this post. Glad jobs are being added down there though. It also says nothing about how many people are underemployed which are MANY everywhere.

Indeed. If you work just 1 day in a month, you are counted as employed for that month. On the other hand, if your unemployment benefits run out, or you don't apply for them, then you are not counted as unemployed. In fact, you are not even counted in the labor force anymore.

Exactly... Those numbers don't get picked up. Not saying things aren't getting better, but numbers don't tell the story sometimes.
