Thinking of moving to Charlotte with my sons. When I moved to another state before I had family there t.o live with until I was able to get into my own place. But this time I would not know anyone. And I would be starting from scratch looking for a place and a job. I am desperatley seeking opinions on how to make this transition work. Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated!!!
Please think very carefully before you move. You said you would not know anyone here. I don't know how old your 3 children are but it will be very difficult to be in a new city with no job and no support. Many people move to a new place thinking it will make their life better but the fact is your problems will likely follow you.
My parents attempted to relocate to Charlotte in 1974. They sent me to live with grandparents for the summer while they moved here, found jobs, got a house rented, moved furniture, then I joined them. But both of them lost their jobs before the year ended - and we all ended up making a quick move to another city in NC.
If you really want to move - do it as cheaply as possible and find someone in the family who can look after the children until you're settled. Be aware the road can continue to be bumpy and prepare further back up plans.

If you're committed to making the move, why waste your time asking for obvious dissenting opinions on this board. It's not rocket science....just move, deal with the ups and downs of trying to find a job in a tough economy.
100% my sentiments for quite some time. I never understood, for example , why ppl keep asking "what are the chances of getting a job." First off this info is available on dozens of real data sites not just "opinion" sites.
Then to make matter worse many ppl, after listening to the good advise/opinions of this board (don't come) they say "I'm coming anyway".
Do you have a job in SD? If so, keep it. Sounds like you are running from something and if you were young and childless with some savings I would say go for it. But you have kids and no support system in Charlotte. Will your kids have a better life in charlotte or is this all about you?
Be honest with yourself and good luck in whatever decision you make.
Despite the snide comments here, the people in Charlotte are very helpful as a rule. However, their points may be lost because some may not have had their bran and constitutional for the day. Know that unemployment in the Charlotte area is above the national average and as I recall is higher than the NC state average.
IF you decide to move, I would suggest selling everything you can't pack in a car or van and start over here -- or wherever you move. There are always people selling their "stuff" so they can move to another city. A friend and his wife who moved around the country every few years and were not attached to their furniture would sell everything except a few items they could transport or ship and then start watching the adds (or Craig's List in this case.)
Good luck. I can understand your frustration. Knowing San Diego, I would hate to leave it for Charlotte...potential for earthquakes aside.
