I'm curious myself where the broadcast towers are for Charlotte... I was looking at OTA. Depending on your antenna you need to be within a certain distance - 30,40, 50 - max I've seen is about 100 mile antennas.

Without knowing more, it's a difficult question to answer, but I can give a general answer. It may just be an issue of pointing it in the right direction.

There are two big TV antenna farms in Charlotte.
  • One is in E. CLT near Rocky River Rd. At this farm is WSOC-9, WCCB-18, WTVI-42, WHKY-14 (repeater), WAXN-64
  • Other farm is in Dallas, NC Here you will find WBTV-3, WCNC-36, WJZY-46, WMYT-55
  • One-offs, WNSC-30 is in Rock Hill, WUNG-58 is in Concord, WHKY main is in Hickory.
  • There are also a few neighborhood independent low power stations. They can only be received for a few miles

So depending on where you are located it might be difficult or easy to pick up all of this with a simple antenna. However WCNC, the NBC channel, should be easy to pick up if you can get others from this location. I recommend going to TVFool.com where you can get the specifics for your address.

I used an OTA for a while had problems, ditched the antenna I was using and purchased a small powered one, was then able to pick up everything.

I have trouble with NBC, but if I move my antennae in a certain direction, I'll get a good signal. Also think about DTV channels like cell phone reception. Depending on the UHF Channel and frequency, the signal propagation; the lower the frequency the better that DTV signal can travel and penetrate through things.

And WTVI is on VHF. Never got a good signal from them where I live.

I use an antenna & WCNC is my problem, too. I found that aiming the antenna at their signal is the only way to pick them up. Without knowing which part of the region you are in, it's impossible to give specific help.

If a person is only slightly mechanically skilled, they can build their HDTV antenna for a few dollars (less than $10) with a few coat hangers, a board, a few screws and washers and a balun or transformer one can get from Radio Shack or Walmart in the electronics (TV) area and a coax or standard TV cable. There are some good and easy examples on YouTube. Go there and search HDTV Coat Hanger antenna. You will see a number of examples - some good and some horrible. We have cable (ATT-U-Verse). I have a little 7 inch flat panel digital battery powered TV that would be used in an emergency. Problem is that the TV only gets channel 9 because of our location (low area near Matthews). I built one of the coat hanger antennas just for grins to see if it would work. I get 20 channels. Blew my mind. I actually built one with large binder clips and a CD case. This antenna gets 10-12 channels.

Footnote to the coat hanger antenna post - the homemade antenna gets all the local Charlotte stations without any problem, along with Rock Hill, Hickory, PBS in Concord (I think the antenna is there).
