Is this area ok? I have an 18 y/o son that may be using the Megabus. I just wonder if this is some seedy area with sketchy people hanging around like a Greyhound station in the 1970's . My understanding is that Megabus doesn't have a station, but just picks up and drops off around certain points. Do passengers just stand on the street waiting? Is the pick up spot obvious? He would be taking a cab to the pick up point. Thanks so much!!!

It is next to the transit center and can be a little hard to find if you don't know exactly where it is. Typically there will be other people waiting and you just ask them. You wait on the sidewalk, not the street. Honestly, there can be some sketchy people hanging about. Shouldn't be a problem during the day. My mother took the megabus (she also took a Greyhound bus from the bus station once) and I was glad I was there to put her on the bus.

Oh boy. Thanks so much for your fast reply. I kind of thought it might be sketchy!!! This would be my son's first time traveling alone and I am debating the best most economical options. He has some street smarts, but IDK, I may just have him fly or drive down and get him to come home (college student coming home for Thanksgiving). The time would be 5pm BTW.

That area is 100 percent safe at 5 p.m. There is so much activity and police presence there, it should be no problem. The downtown area around the transit center is one of the safest in the city and there is plenty to do around it. The transit center itself may be a "culture shock" for someone from the suburbs, but I would hesitate to say it is dangerous in the least. Maybe late at night, but certainly not during the day when people are commuting.

The Megabus stop is on Brevard Street between E. Trade Street and E. 4th street outside of the transit center. I believe there is a bus shelter there as well.

I wouldn't hesitate on letting him ride. It's a great experience to learn how to get around without a car.

I don't think you have anything to worry about as I'm sure your son uses common sense. It's perfectly safe during the day and is easily the busiest part of the city.
