Fascinating--but major ramifications for those living there. What if they have a kid in college at a state school--suddenly they lose in-state tuition?
Since nobody is quite sure where the boundaries are, they should just draw them around these houses.

I guess that this is where having a mobile home would come in handy.

If that is your primary concern, wouldn't it make more sense to finalize the line and simply grandfather in the small populace impacted by this?

The article that I read was in the Kings Mountain Herald.
Kings Mountain, where the battle was fought, was named for a King family who lived at the base of the mountain. The will of George King Sr. was recorded February 26, 1796 & is held in York County SC.
In 1770 John Collett's map shows the Kings Mountain range, called Kings Runn in Anson County. In 1775, King Mountain & King Creek were shown in Tryon County. In 1808 the Price-Strother map showed Kings M in Lincoln County. In 1833 King's Mtn & King's Cr. were shown in South Carolina. In 1882, King's Mt. near Crowder Mt. was in Gaston County.
The City of Kings Mountain was originally called White Plains & was chartered in 1874. Mention of Kings Mountain prior to 1874 can not be the current town.
Moral of the story? If feel strongly tied to being a resident of a particular state...make sure you don't live RIGHT on the border of said state.
Also....don't waste taxpayer money on something that doesn't really matter AND only serves to cause unneeded stress in people's lives who live on the border.

Should Border Patrol Inspectors, Check Points etc be established here before it becomes a problem?
