According to the 2000 census question was: Do you live in gay household?
It wasnt specific nor did it account for those who are college students, bi, transgender or who was uncomfortable answering census.

But census has it in following order.
  1. Asheville
  2. Durham
  3. Carrboro
  4. Charlotte
  5. Winston-Salem
  6. Raleigh
  7. Greensboro
  8. Chapel Hill
  9. Wilmington
  10. High Point
  11. Cary
  12. Fayetteville

I don't know how you measure gay population. Many simply live in the suburbs with or without their mates and are probably not part of any specific census. I have gays in my family, but I don't think that they are "registered". LOL!. Seriously, who knows? My uncle is gay. Most of his friends are straight. It isn't like he is black where it might be a little more obvious. Charlotte doesn't have big gay communities like many older, larger cities do. They originated based on the 'safety in numbers' theory. Gays were a noticable part of Charlotte long before they were in other large cities. Gay clubs were found in many places in the late50s and early60s. Not so much today. I am glad to see that they are an assimilated part of society so it seems. Ashville seems to have a lot of gays, but that might seem like a big gay city because of the concentration in the center part of town. That could be misleading though.
