Are you looking at the HVAC side or plumbing?

My experience is that the companies that heavily advertise are questionable. (Brothers/Morris-Jenkins/etc.).

I use Ross and Witmer.

Plumbing. My electric hot water heater, just over a year old, stopped working. I believe the elements have blown. Don't have the confidence to replace myself.

Brother's advertised a $19.95 diagnostic deal in the CO.

So far, THREE plumbers over THREE days haven't shown up. I'm so annoyed. Ugh.

What gives with people scheduling appointments and not showing?

I would recommend to you Jim Dickerson Plumbing. Your WH may still be in warranty. Dickerson is a great company and will do great work and are honest.
I know one of the techs there, Brian R., he and I worked in the plumbing industry together for several years.

I second this recommendation whole heartedly! Had them come in immediately and took care of an issue with my irrigation very professionally.

I can't believe in this economy workers are not showing up for service calls!

Brother's has always given me great customer service as far as answering the phone quickly, getting an appointment and calling ahead to make sure I'm there etc. HVAC work has always been good and last repair was under warranty.

Can't speak for plumbing but I'd bet they'd show up when they say they will or at least not be a no-show with no explanation.

Brothers does do OK work, but they are hugely expensive. You can probably get a better deal elsewhere.

BROTHER'S called ahead 30 mins, arrived when they said they would, waived the diagnostic fee and the technician advised I go elsewhere to get the work done for a better deal. Not bad.

Two plumbers coming out tomorrow ... I will update then.

I sincerely thank everyone for their input.
