If you need to go to Spartanburg or south of Spartanburg & plan on taking I 85, be aware that I 85 is closed in Gaffney because of a truck accident that damaged a bridge.

This gives good information on the detour. Fiery Crash Kills 2, Closes Interstate - Greenville News Story - WYFF Greenville (http://www.wyff4.com/news/27980907/detail.html - broken link)

Drove by that about 4 hrs ago on my way to Atlanta for work. The entire 6 miles off the freeway detour was a one lane and at a stand still. The CO said I85N would be open by the weekend but I don't know how it could be. They have part of the overhead bridge completely removed. It looks like a mess and the traffic on 85 before having to get off was backed up for ~10 miles.

Have to drive back home on Thursday. How is 85 to 26 to 77 if anyone has ever taken that route before? I know that may be a long way around but the traffic just looked awful today.

If that reopens this week, it will be opened & closed for months while that bridge is rebuilt. SC is not big on working on roads in Cherokee County, so I wouldn't want to guess how long this situation will last..

Without looking at a map, I know that there are back roads to Boiling Springs, NC from the Spartanburg/Greer area. (Be careful, there's a Boiling Springs, SC.) If I were you, I'd look at getting to Boiling Springs, NC. Then take 150 to Shelby & get on 74 eastbound. That will take you to Exit 10 of I 85, & it's a clear shot to Charlotte from there.

I found this video on the detour. This does not sound promising. 12:30 I-85 Detour Update - Video - WYFF Greenville (http://www.wyff4.com/video/27992669/detail.html - broken link)

Coming northbound, take 221 to Chesnee, SC. Stay with 221 to Cliffside. Go from Cliffside to Boiling Springs to Shelby. You will intersect with 74 in Shelby.

just made the drive from Mooresville to Spartanburg yesterday(Sun) for a softball tournament.Coming back home we took exit 90 off 85 and went hwy 29 through Gaffney and on into Blacksburg where we got back on 85.There was not much traffic and it was a simple detour.

That would have been perfect for Sunday traffic. I just don't know how it would hold up for weekday traffic, because commuters from Kings Mountain & Blacksburg would be hopping on to it, & the road condition is less than sterling in Blacksburg. I heard that, at one point, today, the northbound back up was further than that, This may be on again off again clusures for months.

OK, it's reopened, but don't let that fool you. This will be ongoing. There will be evening closures, one lane at a time, to repair I 85. SC DOT officials are consulting with federal officials to see if they can just rebuild the half of the overpass that was removed, or if they have to take down the other half & rebuild the whole thing.

On this link, the video is concerning the detour & the article has the details. I-85 Reopens Tuesday Morning - Greenville News Story - WYFF Greenville (http://www.wyff4.com/news/27996747/detail.html - broken link)

I'm from Gaffney and don't hold your breath on them getting that bridge rebuilt, it will probably sit there for months, i'm not even ruling out years...its a disaster taking detours and it takes you even longer to get home.

Yea according to the Gov. she doesn't consider it a top priority to get the bridge fixed, so it will just sit there for a while until its fixed....
