i'm moving to Charlotte in the new few weeks, and we'll be coming for a week-long visit beginning Monday to try to find jobs and a house to rent. I posted the basics a few days ago. I'm looking for rent to be as inexpensive as possible, since I only plan to rent until my current house in Ohio is sold, so I don't need something really nice. Ideally, $550 or less per month, which I know limits me greatly on rentals. it doesn't need to be IN Charlotte, but it does need to be in a safe neighborhood, at least. Is the Belmont community a decent place? I did find one house on Craigslist that looks like it would work, but I just want to make sure it's ok. Are there other sources you all could recommend that people in Charlotte typically use for finding rental houses? We would prefer to not go to an apartment complex.
If your talking about Belmont 28205 it is a mixed bag. What street is in on? Stay away from Pegram or Hawthorne. If its on Kennon close to the Plaza Midwood Thomas st area you might be okay for safety.
upon looking at the map, it looks like it's right between pegram and Hawthorne... The two you said I should stay away from. I guess that answers my question. Thanks. Any recommendations?
Yeah Parson is not established (to put it nicely). Your budget will make it tough to find a house for rent that is in a decent area anyway. I don't know of any houses in that price point. If you are open to apartments these Crosland residential communities would be your best bet in a good area close to downtown.

Thanks
It's the 'hood and I would not recommend it at all.
Trying to rent a HOUSE for under $800 in Charlotte will put you in the absolute WORST areas of the city.
And apts under $600 can be very iffy, though a lot better than the Belmont neighborhood.
I can recommend a couple of apt complexes if you decide to rethink your plan.
Well, my mortgage in Columbus is about $1100 a month, so that's what i'm budgeted for, I just want something less expensive until i'm able to find a job. I'll look at those apartments mentioned. Thanks for getting me the info on parsons...
I'm also interested in other locations besides charlotte, too.
I'd consider any town within about a 30-45 minute commute to downtown Charlotte. Not to say that my job will end up being in downtown Charlotte, but it seems like a good centralized location to have my radius. With craigslist, I just check the ads, hope I'm skimming through the scammy rent to own housing, and the places that I can tell from the pictures I'd never live, and just go from there. I figure once I get to town on monday that I'll know a little more about where I'd be interested, though.
Try using the crime mapper on the Charlotte Observer website. It can give you a better idea of what crime is actually like in any given neighborhood. Just go to Charlotte news, Carolina Panthers, Charlotte Bobcats, weather, traffic, sports, banking, North Carolina, real estate, jobs, cars | CharlotteObserver.com (http://www.charlotte.com - broken link) subsection crime & click on the neighborhood mapper. You can get an idea of the boundaries of a neighborhood by entering the name of the neighborhood into Google & then retracing the boundaries on the crime mapper.
