Hello all,

My family might be relocating to the Charlotte area. My husband and I are in our late 30's and have three small children: ages 6, 3, and 2. Our top priority is moving to a nice suburb that has excellent schools. It would be a bonus if this nice suburb with excellent schools is kid friendly and offers family activities, festivals, etc.

When telling me about these suburbs, could you also please tell me how far away they are from Costco, super Wal-Mart and a swim school (not something like the YMCA that offers swim classes, but a real swim place that only offers swim lessons and nothing else). Thank you so much!

FYI, Charlotte has one large school system - not district schools. In general, schools on the south side are higher rated and more successful, but good ones can be found in various places throughout the county. So, look to live in south Charlotte or Matthews. Neighboring western Union County is also popular with newcomers and offers good schools.

For swimming you want the Mecklenburg Aquatic Center - there are future Olympians swimming there for sure

Welcome to Mecklenburg Aquatic Club

You can also check out areas north of the city and look in Cabarrus County. The school system isn't as big as Meck and most of the schools are very good. There is the Nomad Aquatic center: http://www.nomadaquatic.com/ right down the road from us. The Super Walmart is about 15 minutes away. We have a BJ's about 20 minutes and a Sam's club about 30 minutes away. Costco is in the south end of town and about a 45 minute drive from us.

What is your budget? How big a home you need? Where are you commuting to?

Try Fort Mill/Tega Cay, SC. Great schools, 2 Super-Walmarts (one in FM/TC and one in Indian Land on the East side of FM), and 20 minutes up I-77 to Costco. Don't know about swim school...my kids went to Little Otter, but we lived in Charlotte then. I tried driving over there after we moved to SC but it was too hard to get there after work. FM/TC is only 20-30 minutes from the MAC, which is referenced upthread.
