I know that as a new resident to NC you must take the written test to obtain a driver's license. However, anyone know if this is the case for returning residents? I left NC in 2001 with a valid license, but have since been licensed in NY and CA. The DMV website indicates they would still have my info on file, and I think I renewed it just prior to leaving so it would probably still be valid.

Has anyone experienced a situation like this?

Do you still have your NC license in your possession?

Assuming the state of New York did not notify NC, you could try requesting a duplicate NC license.

They should issue a NC drivers license after you take the written test again and the "sign" test and hand in your NY license. Then the years left on your previous NC license until expiration will continue on your new NC license. So in a sense it is a duplicate.

Make sure you have proper "NC resident ID" along with your normal ID.

Please explain what is a "N.C.resident ID",where do you get it and how much time do I have after the purchase of a home ? Same for the drivers license, car registration and N.C.plate ? TIA,Alberto E.

Thanks for the info. Yeah, I know they'll give me a new one after I take the test, I'm just hoping to avoid the test!

Alberto E, check out NCDOT Division of Motor Vehicles. All of the information is there.
