Ditto re: I-77 in Virginia.

Google Maps shows 3 routes to Charleston: US-35 all the way, US-33 to I-77, amd US-33 to US-50 to I-77. All three are between 2hrs 50 min and 3 hrs 10 min.

If you go via Marietta/Parkersburg (33/50/77), there are a cluster of motels right at the exit in Marietta (Ohio 7 exit).

At the Marietta exit there are:

Holiday Inn-OK
Hampton Inn-OK
Fairfield Inn-OK (newest)
Comfort Inn- older
Super 8-not horrible

If you go downtown, the Lafayette is awesome!

Nothing decent at the Parkersburg exit but below PKB @ Mineral Wells you can find:

Holiday Inn Express--newest
Hampton Inn--OK
Comfort Inn and Suites--OK
Microtel or Budget something--not sure I would stay there.

All these are just two hours from Columbus but I would go an hour on down to the Ripley exit.

I don't know where you've been looking but all the roads you will be on are 4 lanes from the West Virginia line to Louisville. I suppose if you want to go on some one lane roads you could find them in your area. google if you are being serious.

4 lane all the way to Cardinal Town, but if you looking for 1 lane roads, heres your route. Once you cross into WV on I-77, take U.S. 460 West at Exit 1 back into Virginia thru Bluefield,WV. Then continue on U.S. 460 West once in Va thru, Tazewell, then into Claypool Hill, Va thru Richlands ,Va toward Grundy, Va. The U.S.460 from Richlands to Grundy is four-lanes but it is a drivers road, drop the hammer and hope your tires are in great shape because it is a hoot to drive. But before you get to Grundy, take Va-county routes 680 at Marvin, county rte. 624 near Oakwood or county rte. 638(coke ovens) near Vansant. They all are 1 lane thru the backside of Buchanan County, Va just stay North on them and they all intersect near Whitewood/Pilgrims Knob. Just Follow them til you to get to WV line at Three Forks/Pea Patch, then back to 2 lane unfortunately. Once into WV take WV Rt. 635 to WV Rt. 80 to Bradshaw, then follow WV Rt. 80 to Iaeger, then US 52 North to Gilbert,WV, Then U.S. Rt. 80 to Man, WV(US 52 and WV 80 run parallel from Iaeger to Gilbert). Then take left on WV 10 at Man(finally 4 lanes again) to Logan, WV. Take U.S. 119(Corridor G) speed limit 65 from Logan alway to Charleston,WV.

The one lane roads thru Virginia should equal out to 14-22 miles out of which 3 routes you take. But you could also go from Grundy, Va to Hurley, Va to Phelps, Ky the back way 1 lane only quite a fun drive. Lots of sites to see might take a while.

As far as I know most one lane roads in WV dead end to the head of the holler, they are no thru routes.

Make sure you have $6 available for the three toll booths on the WV Turnpike. All four lane as already indicated. Only problem would be if there was a bad snowstorm and there are places you don't want to be in serious snow storms along I-64 and I-77.

I 64 is a 4 lane, interstate grade freeway from Charleston, WV to Louisville. in the Louisville suburbs around Shelbyville, it widens to 6 lanes and even 8 for a time. I recommend you stay at a hotel in Louisville.

You wouldn't be driving the WV Turnpike to get from Danville to I-64. You'd be in US-119, aka Corridor G, which is a 4 lane highway.

Much of I-64 between Charleston and Huntington is already 6 lanes wide. No all, but some.
