How long do you plan to rent? I wouldnt rent more than a year because its much cheaper to buy and you get equity! Nice houses there can be had for $50k!

Do you mean SOUTH CHARLESTON and not "Southern Charleston"? South Chas. is technically a separate city, though so close, but a burb really. It's right across from a chemical plant though - (stinky sometimes).

Across the river from Charelston is the "Kanawha City" area and it has some nice areas.

South Hills or Fort Hill section of Charleston are real nice areas, more pricy areas to live in, though. West Side hill area is more reasonalbly priced and pretty nice. Don't be afraid of the "Hill"--our city is very good at snow removal. Snow is not a major problem--snow one day slush the next.
