Hi, I live in the Charleston area and I can tell you that is no place I'd rather live! Anywhere!
Downtown is in my opinion the best part of the city, because of the many businesses that call it home including dining, shopping, art galleries, museums, public spaces, and the Charleston Town Center Mall and Civic Center. The village district in downtown has dozens of stores, restaurants, cafes, bars, ect... and it is in walking distance to everything important. Also in downtown is the Capitol Market which is a urban market that offers dozens of vendors, and also an inside that has an organic grocery store, coffee shop, fish market, wine cellar, meat market, and a very good bistro named Soho's. Other downtown things to do; Appalachian Power Park, (home of the Power semi pro baseball team), The Clay center of arts and science, (museum and theater), and the East End Historic District.
Other good communities in the area!
-Kanawha City
-South Hills
-South Charleston
-Corridor G/Southridge
-St. Albans
-Charleston's East End/ East End Main St.
The schools here in the Charleston metro are the best in West Virginia. Also the hospitals are some of the best in the entire region.
The COL here is among the best in the country, and we do have the lowest energy cost in the country.
Not to forget that the city itself is beautiful, and your in the middle of some of the best natural beauty east of the Mississippi. Almost all of WV's main tourist areas are in a short drive. The New River Gorge, Hawks Nest State Park, Kanawha Falls, Gauley Bridge, Kanawha State Forest, and the Kanawha River itself are all local and amazing places.
We have hosted big events like The World's Strongest Man, Marshall Arts Championships, The Charleston Distance Run, ect... and some WV's major events like Festiv-All, which is a 2 week long art, drama, music, and cooking festival that brings in thousand of tourist and big name bands and singers. The Civic Center, Municipal Theater, and Clay Center offer a wide variety of drama, music, sports, and other forms of entertainment which include the biggest names and acts.
The Capitol itself is one of the best in the country. With memorials that pay tribute to soilders, miners, and even President Lincoln himself. The Cutural Center is WV's main museum, and performance hall on the campus of the capitol complex.
The area has two great universities in The U of Charleston, and WV State U.
We love to take advantage of our awsome rivers that run through Charleston. Haddad River Front Park, or "The Levi" was remodled last year and now includes a retractible roof, and state of the art stage. During the summer there is live music every friday night, and there is always street fairs, car shows, races, or concerts there all year long. There is also a bike and walking path that follow the Kanawha River the entire length of Charleston. Boating is a big part of Charleston too, with docks all along the metro valley, and even a couple boat restaurants where you can pull your vessel up right to the door.
The Parks are outstanding too. Coonskin Park is a large county park that has a golf course, soccer stadium, driving range, lake, tennis, putt putt, and miles of trails and paths. There are dozens of parks in gardens that make up the urban parts of Charleston too.
One of the best things about Charleston is that the metro has everything you need. Lots of retail, healthcare, banking, different types of schools, churches, communities! You name it, We have it!!!
But above all Charleston has maintained its American charm, friendly spirit, hospitality, and historic icons that made it great.
Hope this helps
