Daniel Island is a great part of the lowcountry. You're still about 25+ minutes from the beaches, but Daniel Island has plenty of amenities within walking distance, as well as waterfront homes with deep water access, shops, restaurants, etc. It's certainly worth a look as well as Isle of Palms, Sullivan's Island, Folly Beach and Edisto Beach for vacation areas. It really depends on what amenities you'd want at your vacation home.

Buying a vacation home on Daniel Island might be a good idea, since you'll have access to many high-class amenities. Your house would actually be in the city of Charleston, so you would have a big city police and fire department to protect your home. The lifestyle is low key, even though I-526 is practically next door to give you access to the rest of the metro area. There are also plenty of golf courses, pools, and parks for you and your family to enjoy.

Waterfront property there will be quite expensive, though. If you have a boat, there is a marina where you can store it on the island.

I agree...Daniel Island is a wonderful community close to Charleston and the beaches. However, something to think about may be going to the islands (Isle of Palms is my favorite) and looking there. Then you would have a good chance of renting your house during the times you are not there. My mother has rented her beach house on the Isle of Palms for years during the months the family doesn't use it.
