Hello!
We are looking at a possible job offer coming from North Charleston...looking for advice ...
He will be working somewhere on the Naval Weapons Station (i believe that's North Charleston?)
We are looking to either rent or buy a home (rent up to $1500/mo or purchase under $200k)...what areas are good for schools? low crime rate? short commute for him?
Our son is autistic (age 3 1/2) and attends a pre-k special education class in a public school setting monday - friday all day where we currently are....I keep reading about Dorchester schools being good?? Any advice, help would be much appreciated! I hope everyone stays dry and safe for the hurricane.
Thanks!

Default Dorchester District 2

There are some North Charleston addresses within the Dorchester District 2 School district which is one of the best in the area. Someone posted a link to a very informative list of subdivisions in the district earlier this week in another thread. Here it is:

Most of my employees (work on NWS) live in the Summerville area. The commute isn't great but for them, it's an affordable area with pretty good schools. Personally, I live in Mt Pleasant, but at your price range, you would find some very nice houses in the Summerville, Dorchester 2 area. That would be tough to find something in Mt Pleasant at that range.

Dorchestor 2 sounds like a great choice for you. Also, call the district and see what programs they have for your child.

I thought the Naval Weapons center was in Goose Creek? But I am not 100% sure. You might want to consider some neighborhoods over there as well. Like Liberty Hall, Tanner Plantation (actually Hanahan), Crowfield Plantation. I am a parent, too and what I would do is call each district and see what programs they have for your son and then search for a home accordingly. Good Luck!

It's in both. Depending on where you work on the NWS, could have a N Chas zip.

I think with Goose Creek you need to be selective. Some schools are better than others, as well as neighborhoods. It is spread out quite a bit and the areas closer to the Weapons station/North Charleston is a little iffy. We live in an area of Goose Creek that I feel very safe. The school my kids go to seems to be great (we just relocated). So far we are pleased.

Summerville is very nice too. We looked at many houses in that area. We just didn't find anything that felt like home to us. I'd move to Summerville without any hesitation.

try to consider Mt. Pleasant. Its a great school base on national school ratings & a good area too. hospital, schools shopping, beach are within 0 miles and less than 25-20 miles to be in downtown charleston

they have new construction houses at the budget that you are looking
here in Mt. Pleasant. Check it out.
