Hi All,
My husband, 2 y.o. son and I are considering kicking our beloved Brooklyn to the curb, and heading south. The preschool situation here is absurd (everything is private, $$$, and all the schools we applied to have wait-listed us), and so I'm wondering if anyone can give me any insight into preschools/schools in general. We are looking to move to the downtown area, as walkability is very important to us.
Thanks in advance!

My earlier post just might give you some of the insight you are seeking.
No, we were not interested to live in downtown Chas. as you are. We just closed on our house in Mt Pleasant, specifically Park West.
But moving from Brooklyn (Gravesend or Sheepshead Bay which more people have heard of) with our 2 year old, so some of it might interest you
Because in my experince being in the lower ranges for the decent parts of downtown does not necessarily put you into what most mean by walkable. Almost the entire downtown has sidewalks so it is walkable by that standard but if you are North of the crosstown or on the west side of the peninsula downtown you will not have many bars/restaurants/stores in immediate proximity.
That was my scenario & I chose the close-in area of West Ashley (Avondale/Byrnes Down/Windemere) because it put me withing four-five blocks of a couple of grocery stores, over a dozen bars and restaurants, a set of stores and a greenway. Similarly the east side of Park Circle in North Charleston is walking distance to its smaller downtown area that is picking up steam in regard to restaurants/bars and a park. Riverland Terrace in James Island has a similar proximity.
The Old Village and Ion in Mt Pleasnat are also walkable but at those price points you can still buy in the nicer parts of downtown. Sullivans Island and Folly Beach both have a walkable/small town vibe (as opposed to walkable and urban.)
