Wife is about to do a 1 month trip to Israel, i was wondering what the best way would be for her to stay in touch with family back home in Canada
She has a cell phone but no laptop or ipad/tablet type device.
Not sure how popular or how accessible internet cafe's are over in Israel. i'm pretty sure long distance calls on her cell phone would be brutally expensive.
Anyone have some advice for an affordable option?
I use Skype over Wifi on my iPhone from Africa and it's amazingly clear. I don't think you can get it for an ordinary cell phone, but you can for a smartphone.

It depends what you call brutally. Using Verizon from a US account is $1.99 per minute for cell pnones. Check to see if your cell is CDMA and contact your carrier.
She can ask for the unlock code explaining that she'll go overseas and get a prepaid SIM here or there and control her expenses that way (If AT&T provides the code, I assume any company will do the same... ? I've done it a couple of times). Other alternatives are gtalk, skype, or similar. Calling cards could work too.
