I'm in Germany and I was thinking about buying a cheap phone here and then bringing it back home to use as a prepaid thing. I don't care about owning a smart phone and I love how the majority of people here seem to use these cheap, no frills phones. I find it challenging to find the same type of thing in Canada right now, as everyone seems to have something more complicated.

Ayways, I know little about phones. Can I do this? Anything I should know before I buy one?
Yes you can do this generally speaking. But more specifically what network are you planning to go on in Canada. That will really help determine the model you are buying there and whether it would work in Canada.
Which province are you heading back to?
Ontario. Honestly, I have no idea which provider. I'd have to do some research. Major ones in ON are Rogers, Bell, Telus, Virgin...not sure which others right now.
I was looking at a bunch of models on sale here in the local Media Markt. The Nokia 206, and Telme C140/C155 mainly.
The Nokia 206 will work, but you really need to speak to the person at the store or follow the rules below.
That device comes in different variants. A Dual SIM or a Single SIM.
For any phone you are buying there in Germany and for it to work exclusively in N America, it will need to have 850/1900mhz radio. It will say it clearly on the box on the sticker that has all the serial numbers etc.
It will NOT work if it says 900/1800mhz only. Those bands only work for in the EU.
Just keep that rule in mind about the bands when looking at phones.
One more thing for consideration, a phone bought outside of North America might have to be returned to Europe for warranty service if there are any equipment issues. In the US, the same model is sold on Metro PCS and appears to have the correct cellular frequencies in North America.
